REPORT: Hand grenade wounds 7 soldiers in Tripoli

Several soldiers were injured on Saturday when a hand grenade was hurled in a Tripoli neighborhood, as soldiers started preparing for a “major operation” in the northern city.

The hand grenade was hurled at an army patrol in Tripoli's Bab al-Tabbaneh neighborhood.

"Seven soldiers, including two army officers, were wounded in the incident,” the army's statement said, adding that two civilians were also injured.

Earlier in the day, the state-run National News Agency reported that a soldier was wounded when a hand grenade was tossed in a Tripoli neighborhood.

The incident took place in the Bab al-Hadid area near the Tripoli fortress.

Saturday's security incident comes as the military army is implementing a security plan in the northern city, which was adopted by the cabinet, to restore calm and put an end for the violence in Tripoli

The port city of Tripoli has long been a stronghold of Sunni Islamists in northern Lebanon.

But the city has become increasingly volatile in recent months due to the civil war in neighboring Syria, where the Sunni majority is leading a revolt against President Bashar al-Assad.

Disputes from neighboring Syria's civil war frequently inflame sectarian grievances in Tripoli. These clashes pit gunmen from both the mostly Sunni Bab Tabbaneh district and the Jabal Mohsen district which mostly comprises residents of Syrian President Bashar Assad's Alawite sect, a Shiite Islam offshoot.
