REPORT: Gathering held in solidarity with journalists summoned by STL
Lebanese journalists held a gathering on Monday at the Lebanese Press Syndicate headquarters to voice solidarity with al-Akhbar newspaper editor-in-chief Ibrahim al-Amin and Deputy News and Political Program Manager at Al-Jadeed TV, Karma Khayat.

The attendees highlighted the need to uphold the principles of freedom in the media and condemned the decision of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon to summon the mentioned journalists on two counts of Contempt and Obstruction of Justice.

In this regard, Hezbollah MP Hassan Fadlallah denounced the tribunal's practices as "an aggression to freedom of the press," noting that al-Akhbar newspaper and Al Jadeed TV will continue on their mission to disseminate truth.

For his part, the CEO of the Lebanese Broadcasting Corporation International (LBCI) Sheikh Pierre El-Daher stressed the need to unify Lebanon's media scene, pointing out that press freedom is "sacred".

Sheikh Daher also said that al-Akhbar daily and Al Jadeed TV revealed dangerous facts, adding that this course should not be disrupted.

On Sunday, the National Audiovisual Media Council denounced accusations launched by the STL against al-Jadeed TV and al-Akhbar daily, the state-run National News Agency reported.

"It represents a breach of Lebanese sovereignty and a violation of the freedom of press," the council said in a statement.

This comes after activists staged a protest near the ministry of information in Hamra, in solidarity with al-Jadeed TV and al-Akhbar newspaper journalists.

The accused are being charged under Rule 60 bis (A) of the Rules of Procedure and Evidence and all the charges relate to the Ayyash et al. case.

The STL was set up by the United Nations at the Lebanese government's request to try the alleged perpetrators of the 2005 bombing in which former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri and 21 others were killed.
