REPORT: Syrian refugees in Lebanon lack medical care, international support
The lack of international assistance and medical care in Lebanon are forcing Syrian refugees in Lebanon to forgo treatment, run up huge debts or return to their war-torn country, Amnesty International said on Wednesday.     

"The international community is highly responsible for this situation given its 'shameful failure' to fund United Nations refugee programs in Lebanon," the rights watchdog said.      

Audrey Gaughran, Amnesty's head of global issues, said hospital treatment and specialized care for the displaced Syrians in Lebanon are insufficient, adding that the situation exacerbated due to the significant shortage of international funding.      

Amnesty also noted that Lebanon's expensive and fragmented health care system makes it difficult for refugees to afford treatment on their own.

Lebanon, an overburdened and under-resourced country, has been grappling with the rising influx of Syrian refugees.          

More than one million refugees from Syria are now registered in Lebanon. The number is expected to reach 1.5 million by the end of 2014.
