REPORT: Intensive contacts held with Sama to settle World Cup broadcasting issue
Intensive contacts were held on Sunday between Finance Minister Ali Hassan Khalil, Sports and Youth Minister Abdel Motaleb al-Hennawi, Telecommunications Minister Boutros Harb and the cable television provider Sama, which acquired the exclusive rights to broadcast the World Cup 2014 games in Lebanon.          

Contacts are ongoing in order to find a solution for the Lebanese people to be able to watch the games.        

In this regard, sources said the amount Sama has paid, and is requesting now, is 5 million dollars, adding however that the Lebanese negotiators were ready to pay a lesser amount.           
“All parties involved with negotiations have agreed that there was a progress in talks, which may lead to a positive outcome in the next few hours,” the sources said.         

For his part, minister Hennawi stressed that negotiations with Sama company are underway, hoping that talks would yield positive results soon.        

In turn, Ali Hassan Khalil said his ministry is ready to make a contribution to resolve the dispute over the amount Lebanon has to pay so that all the Lebanese people could watch this worldwide event.        

As well, minister Harb is following up on negotiations from abroad and may announce their outcome within the next few hours.         

Later, Sama company told LBCI that contacts and consultations are being held over the World Cup broadcasting issue, adding that no serious deals were brokered so far.        

The company also said it was awaiting a written formula of the agreement over the mentioned issue.

Qatar’s state-owned BeIN, the new name for Al-Jazeera’s sports channel, has the distribution rights to the 2014 World Cup. Currently, Sama is the only one with the rights to air the World Cup in Lebanon and is charging $110 for the full package.             


This comes after Lebanese state-run TV channel Tele Liban failed to acquire the broadcasting rights for the World Cup.
