REPORT: Lawmakers fail to elect a president for the seventh time

Speaker Nabih Berri deferred on Wednesday the parliamentary session tasked to elect a new president until Wednesday July 2nd after Lebanese lawmakers failed to choose a new head of state.

Only 63 MPs attended the session with 86 MPs (out of 128) being the required amount of lawmakers needed for holding a constitutional assembly.

Prior to the session, Speaker Nabih Berri held a meeting with MPs Fouad Siniora, Bahiya Hariri and Georges Adwan, as well as Minister of Education Elias Bou Saab.

This as another meeting was held between Prime Minister Tammam Salam, MPs Fouad Siniora, Najib Mikati, Jamal Jarrah and Georges Adwa, as well as Minister of Education Elias Bou Saab to discuss the file of the pay scale.

Lebanon has plunged into presidential vacuum following the end of former President Michel Sleiman's mandate on May 25.

Six electoral sessions were held, but parliament has failed so far to elect a new head of state due to lack of quorum.
