REPORT: MP Kanaan says Change and Reform bloc’s proposal a democratic practice

Member of the Change and Reform bloc MP Ibrahim Kanaan said Friday that the current parliamentary electoral law resulted in the marginalization of the Christians and the formation of two major blocs, neither one of which is capable of electing a new president without allying with MP Walid Jumblatt’s bloc.

During a press conference, MP Kanaan said that the proposal presented by the Change and Reform bloc to elect the president directly by the people, will not turn the parliamentarian system into a presidential one, adding that such a change requires numerous constitutional amendments.

“The presidential vacuum can be resolved once the political forces agree on electing a strong president,” he said, stressing that constitutional amendments promote democracy.

He added that their proposal is a democratic and a national practice, and does not segregate the Lebanese factions, pointing out that they are open to any cooperation with both allies and opponents.
