REPORT: Arsal threatened with second round of clashes
A Lebanese Armed Forces patrol came under fire on Thursday in the border town of Arsal, and reinforcements were called.

Sources told LBCI that the Lebanese Armed Forces secured the release of 4 soldiers reported missing in Arsal, noting that the whereabouts of a fifth soldier remained unknown.    

In turn, Interior Minister Nouhad al-Mashnouq pointed out that preliminary reports said that one LAF soldier was wounded and another is missing in Arsal clashes.

In this regard, sources from the Islamic State and al-Nusra Front denied, in a statement to Turkey’s news agency Anatolia, reports stating that they detained a Lebanese army soldier during today’s battles in Arsal.

Earlier in the day, sources told LBCI that several were wounded in the clashes between the Lebanese army and gunmen in the Wadi Ata area in Arsal’s barren region.
 
On Wednesday overnight, armed men attacked a Lebanese army checkpoint in the Wadi Hmeid area in the border town of Arsal.

The Lebanese army however repelled them, killing and wounding several gunmen, while no casualties were reported among the Lebanese army troops.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Lebanese army shelled militant positions in the border zone with Syria near Arsal, a security source said.

It was the first such engagement since the radical Sunni Muslim militants including fighters affiliated to Islamic State withdrew from the town of Arsal three weeks ago following five days of deadly battles with the army.

The army opened fire with artillery after observing suspicious movement by the militants, the source said. There was no immediate information on casualties. Also on Wednesday, Syrian warplanes bombed the same area, the source added.

The five-day battle in Arsal marked the biggest spillover to date of the Syrian civil war into Lebanon. Dozens of people were killed, including 18 soldiers.

The insurgents included members of the Nusra Front, al Qaeda's official affiliate in the Syrian war, and Islamic State, which has seized swathes of territory in Syria and Iraq. The militant forces withdrew on Aug. 7, taking with them at least 30 ISF and LAF soldiers.
