REPORT: Cautious calm prevails in Brital's barren range following deadly clashes

A cautious calm is prevailing late on Sunday in Brital's barren range following deadly clashes between Hezbollah fighters and members from the Nusra Front and the Islamic State.

Security sources confirmed that Hezbollah retook the Ain El Sa'a base that was attacked by gunmen from the Nusra Front and other factions in Brital's barren range.

A group of gunmen attacked on Sunday a base of the Lebanese Shi'ite group Hezbollah in al-Mahafir region in Brital's barren range where fierce clashes have taken place. Both sides suffered casualties.

"Two Hezbollah fighters were killed and at least 16 of the armed groups," sources said.

Clashes have also flared up in the Younin area located in Baalbek's barren range, prompting Hezbollah to bring in reinforcements.

"Hezbollah has responded to sources of fire in Brital's barren range, targeting gunmen with heavy artillery fire," sources told LBCI, noting that several civilians partook in the battle in order to protect their regions.

A Hezbollah source also told Agence France Presse that Hezbollah bases in Baalbek were attacked by armed groups coming from Syria's Qalamoun, adding that the group responded to sources of fire, inflicting heavy losses on the insurgents.

Mohammad Khaled Hamza, dubbed Abi Sohayb, is a Nusra Front commander who was killed during Sunday's clashes. His body was taken to the field hospital of al-Rahma in Arsal.

The Sunni insurgents see Iran-backed Hezbollah among their chief foes. Fighters from the Lebanese group have been aiding President Bashar al-Assad in the Syrian civil war, fighting groups such as al Qaeda's Nusra Front and Islamic State which has seized tracts of land in Syria and Iraq.

Violence from Syria has often spread into the border town of Arsal and surrounding areas, where the Lebanese army has also battled insurgents.

In August, Islamic State and Nusra Front fighters stormed Arsal in the worst spillover of Syria's war into its neighbor to date, killing and capturing members of the Lebanese military.
