"We did not backtrack on the decision to kill al-Bazzal nor did we extend the deadline," a source close to Al Qaeda-linked Nusra Front told Anatolia news agency late on Friday.       

"The equation is clear: we demand the release of a female prisoner in exchange for halting the execution," the source told the agency.       

Reports said earlier that the militant group has backed down from its threat to execute Lebanese captive soldier Ali al-Bazzal following efforts carried out by Lebanese General Security leader Abbas Ibrahim.               

The Nusra Front warned on Friday it would kill another kidnapped Lebanese soldier should the government fail to secure the release of a female prisoner.          

"There are only eight hours left to release our sister Joumana Hmayyed or else we will carry out the execution of captive Ali al-Bazzal," the Nusra Front said via Twitter.                 

The group also slammed the Lebanese cabinet for "dragging the sons of the country's communities into a lost battle," adding "then, it is them who will pay the price for Hezbollah's involvement in the Syrian war".
