REPORT: Birth of royal twins proclaimed at Monaco palace
The official announcement of the birth of Monaco's royal twins was made on Thursday (December 11), as protocol dictates with a notice posted on the walls of the Princely Palace.

Gabriella and her younger brother Jacques, who becomes heir to the principality's centuries-old throne, were born on Wednesday evening and their arrival was greeted with canon fire and bell ringing throughout the world's second-smallest country.

Crowds of tourists and locals gathered in the winter sun outside the palace to see the chamberlain hang the hand-written notices on the walls.

"I have the pleasure to announce that Princess Charlene, my beloved wife, gave birth on December 10, 2014, to two children," the notice, posted in French and English, read.

Earlier, Prince Albert II, whose Grimaldi family have ruled Monaco for 700 years, gave a televised address to the people in which he spoke of his desire to share his joy with the world.

Princess Charlene and her husband are soon expected to officially present the twins to the people, and a national day of celebration will follow.
