REPORT: Kataeb party leader Amine Gemayel pays rare visit to South Lebanon
Kataeb party leader Amine Gemayel arrived on Saturday morning in south Lebanon, his first official visit to the region since he was president in the 1980s.

"I am here in Qlaya, the land of patriotism, love and openness that has for so long embraced national unity and assimilation," Gemayel said at the Municipality building.

"We are here to coordinate with any side so that the south can remain a symbol of love, unity and openness," he added.

The accompanying delegation includes Labor Minister Sejaan Azzi and former Minister Salim Sayegh.

Gemayel urged residents of the village to remain rooted on their land, hailing their steadfastness and describing it as the true form of resistance.

Gemayel also visited Khalwet al-Bayadah, a predominantly Druze region, whereby he urged cooperation among the Lebanese people “to address the challenges ahead.”

Gemayel is visiting the south in a bid to solidify dialogue between his party and the Shiite parties of Speaker Nabih Berri and Hezbollah.

With tensions have been growing in the country due to the sectarian crisis in neighboring Syria, several Lebanese leaders have launched dialogue initiatives, with the most anticipated talks between Hezbollah and the Future Movement.

In the framework of his visit to the South, Gemayel also visited the residence of Finance Minister Ali Hassan Khalil in al-Khiyam region where he voiced his appreciation to efforts exerted by Speaker Nabih Berri, noting that he embodies the democratic life in Lebanon.

For his part, Ali Hassan Khalil said Lebanon is facing several dangers, such as the Israeli threats and the new takfiri terrorism that are taking their toll on all parties.

“Gemayel’s visit indicates that he is adamant on dialogue and openness,” Khalil said, adding “the danger lies in divisions on major national issues”.

In turn, Loyalty to the Resistance Bloc MP Ali Fayyad urged the Lebanese parties to be open for dialogue in order to address political differences.
