The security forces have also transferred most of the inmates from Building B to Building D and proceeded with their operation in a smooth way.
“We have launched a security operation in search of ‘forbidden items’ at the Roumieh jail including the Building B,” the ISF said, noting that some inmates set mattresses on fire.
The ISF also noted that there were no casualties, adding “the situation is under control”.
Meanwhile, a group of young men gathered at Tripoli’s Nahr Abu Ali roundabout to protest against the measures being implemented at the prison.
The Roumieh jail is the largest and most notorious Lebanese prison located in Roumieh, Matn district. It holds almost 5,500 inmates and is known to be very overcrowded. The jail holds convicted inmates and prisoners on remand.
The prisoners are able to communicate outside with mobile phones and security sources have said some are still involved in attacks against the state.
A double suicide attack on Saturday killed at least nine people at a cafe in the Lebanese northern city of Tripoli. It was claimed by the al Qaeda-linked Nusra Front, members of which live in Roumieh.
