REPORT: Amer al-Rifai elected new Tripoli Mayor

Amer al-Rifai was elected Thursday as the new Mayor of Tripoli, by 19 votes to 1, with the participation of 20 out of 24 members of the municipal council.

Governor of the North Ramzi Nohra announced the result, hoping that cooperation will be maintained throughout the mandate in line with the best interest of the city.

Former Tripoli Mayor Nader al-Ghazal resigned from his position last Saturday (April 25).

In a press conference he held to explain the circumstances of his resignation, al-Ghazal said that he took the decision due to “an executive deadlock prevalent within the municipal board.”

However, well-informed political sources revealed that Ghazal’s resignation came as a result of the Future Movement’s dissatisfaction with his performance, adding that former Prime Minister Saad Hariri had asked him to step down during a meeting they had held in Saudi Arabia.
