Head of the Progressive Socialist Party MP Walid Jumblatt said Friday that the situation in Syria must be dealth with in a calm and political manner, noting that any incitement may further threaten the Druze in Syria.
Following the Confessional Council of the Druze, MP Jumblatt said a solution cannot be reached with Bashar Assad reigning as president, pointing out that the Syrian regime and the Israelis meet on a decisive point, namely "regional disintegration".
In this regard, he denounced the killing of hundreds of Syrian people due the regime’s daily air strikes across the country, adding that the number of the Syrian Druze does not exceed 500,000.
“The majority of the Syrian people are Sunnis and the terrorism practiced by the regime led them to join the ranks of the al-Nusra Front,” he said.
On another note, Jumblatt stressed the need to hold on to State legitimacy, adding, “we must continue our battle to protect Lebanon’s sovereignty and independence.”
Nusra Front fighters shot dead 20 people in a Druze village in northwestern Syria on Wednesday - an incident ignited by Nusra's attempt to confiscate a house.
Druze leaders had issued a call to arms in Sweida this week, alarmed by advances from the west and also from the east, where the Islamic State has been attacking the army.
