REPORT: Minister of Justice Rifi accuses Hezbollah of leaking videos depicting torture of Roumieh inmates
Minister of Justice Achraf Rifi accused Hezbollah on Tuesday of leaking the videos depicting officers torturing Islamist inmates at the Roumieh Prison.
 
“I accuse Hezbollah of leaking the videos,” Rifi stressed in a joint press conference after meeting with Interior Minister Nouhad Machnouq.
 
“There are around four videos, and only Hezbollah had access to some of them,” he added.
 
However, Minister Machnouq did not support Rifi’s statements, saying he had “no accurate information” concerning the source of the leak.
 
For its part, Hezbollah completely rejected the accusations, saying they “lack credibility.”
 
In a statement, Hezbollah lamented the accusation saying, “it is shameful that the main suspect in the case is neglect his responsibilities by accusing others.”
 
The comments come following media reports stating that Rifi leaked the videos and orchestrated the resulting street protests in a bid to undermine the reputation of Interior Minister Machnouq.
 
Rifi and Machnouk are both members of the Future Movement and are considered as potential candidates for the post of prime minister.
 
Roumieh Prison came under inspection this week after footage leaked on social media platforms purported to show Internal Security Forces officers torturing prisoners. The videos were recorded when security forces quelled riots by Islamist inmates last April.
