REPORT: Government fails to agree on waste management crisis
The Lebanese government failed on Thursday to agree on procedures to deal with the country's waste crisis, which Prime Minister Tammam Salam blamed on the political conflict, as he warned that he could resort to resignation if the deadlock on several pending issues continued.

Following the cabinet session that was chaired by PM Salam at the Grand Serail, Information Minister Ramzi Jreij said that the PM dubbed the country's environmental situation a “disaster.”

Jreij said Salam told the cabinet that “the crisis was long overdue since there had only been temporary solutions implemented over several years.”

On another note, ministers representing the Change and Reform and Loyalty to the Resistance blocs refrained from signing decrees pertaining to the appointment of security and military officers.

Similarly, the ministerial waste committee convened today at around 7 p.m. under the chairmanship of PM Salam but failed to agree on the waste management file.

Lebanon has been grappling with a waste crisis following the July 17 closure of the Naameh landfill.

The cabinet pledged last year that the said landfill would be shut down and an alternative site would be found, however failed to live up to its promises.

The piles of garbage rotting in the summer heat triggered nationwide outrage and serious health warnings.

To get rid of waste, frustrated residents set fire to dumpsters and trash containers, further polluting the hot and humid air.

The mess is a stark reminder of the cabinet crisis afflicting Lebanon, where politicians divided by local and regional crises have even failed to agree on where to dump the capital city's rubbish.
