On the 21st of May, at zero hour, the mandate of the new parliament kicks off for four years, to end on the 20th of May 2022.
On the 21st, the eldest MP, who is 87-year-old Michel al-Murr is supposed to set a date for a parliamentary session to elect the new Speaker, a session that requires a regular quorum of 65 deputies, and the speaker gets elected by majority of votes.
After his election, the speaker will deliver a speech and the members of the council’s bureau committee are elected, including the speaker’s deputy, two secretaries and three delegates. If the time allows, the parliamentary subcommittees, their heads and rapporteurs get also elected.
With the start of the parliament’s new mandate, the president can set dates for the parliamentary consultations at the presidential palace to appoint a new Prime Minister, who will form a new government.
