Lebanese University - M1 students taken aback by sudden registration fee increase

Each year, Lebanese University students hope that, for a change, the university’s administration will not delay the beginning of the academic year. However, this year, their hopes seem to be dashed.     

Prior to the beginning of the academic year at the Lebanese University, the administration increased the registration fees for students enrolling for the first year of Masters (M1) by three folds.

In the details, the administration issued a memorandum in September calling on students to head to the different faculties to register for the new academic year without mentioning any fee increase. On September 25, students were surprised by the issuance of a new memorandum calling on students enrolled in M1 to pay a registration fee of 500 US dollars. As for those who had already paid the fees, they received an e-mail urging them to pay an additional 500,000 LBP.     

In this regard, the President of the Lebanese University Adnan El Sayed Hussein told LBCI that he is simply abiding by the law by imposing this increase “since the registration fee for undergraduate studies differ from that of graduate studies”. “This logic is rejected by students”, he said.      

For their part, the students stressed that they will not remain arms folded and pledged to take steps to condemn this decision.       

In turn, the head of the students’ union at the Lebanese University’s Faculty of Sciences Ahmad Arar told LBCI that he called on the students not to register for the M1 after the increase, urging all M1 students to hold a sit-in at 10 am on Tuesday to protest against this “unjustified” raise.
