Prime Minister Najib Mikati held a series of Arab and international meetings and discussions that tackled the situation in Lebanon and ways to support the country amidst the crisis it is going through, on the first day at the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26)” Summit in Glasgow, Scotland.
In this framework, PM Mikati met with Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani and the two discussed the bilateral relations.
The Qatari leader affirmed that he will dispatch Qatar’s Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani to Beirut soon to find ways to support Lebanon and to address the Lebanon-Gulf crisis.
Mikati also met with his Kuwaiti counterpart Sheikh Sabah al-Khalid al-Sabah and stressed on Lebanon’s keenness on the "best ties with the countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council.”
From his end, the Kuwaiti PM affirmed “his country’s continuous support for Lebanon on all fronts, and its keenness on the unity of the nations of the Gulf Cooperation Council.
Sheikh Sabah affirmed that “with its wisdom Lebanon is capable of addressing any problem, and it will find all the needed support from Kuwait and the Arab countries.”
Mikati also met with Spain’s Prime Minister Predro Sanchez who affirmed his country’s continuous support for Lebanon through the European group.
PM Mikati went on to meet with the President of the European Council Charles Michel and discussed with him the European Union's support for Lebanon and the current and expected steps in this regard.
Mikati also met with the International Monetary Fund chief Kristalina Georgieva, who confirmed the IMF’s will to assist Lebanon through its current crisis.
In the same context, Mikati met French President Emanuel Macron who was keen to extend the meeting more than once despite his busy schedule, expressing "France's devotion to Lebanon's political and economic stability.”
Later on, he discussed with German Chancellor Angela Merkel Germany's readiness to support Lebanon in all fields. Merkel gave immediate directions to her advisors to consider the Lebanese demands expressed by PM Mikati, especially in the field of infrastructure, and to keep pace with the course of negotiations between Lebanon and the International Monetary Fund, and the file of the displaced Syrians.
She stressed Germany's keenness to support Lebanon's stability and recovery, praising "PM Mikati's wisdom in dealing with internal and external political challenges.”
Mikati also met with Armenian President Armen Sarkissian, Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades, his Italian counterpart Mario Draghi and Prince Albert of Monaco.
Mikati is set to meet later in the day Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.
