REPORT: The double plight of people with special needs in Lebanon

In addition to their never-ending plight, people with special needs in Lebanon are suffering due to the lack of infrastructure specific for members of society with special needs.        

On the World Disability Day, LBCI paid a visit to several people with special needs whereby the extent of the lack of amenities needed by those persons was revealed.          

In this regard, Yehya told LBCI that he has to crawl down his building’s stairs every morning to reach the street where he faces another problem: sidewalks which are not built to be accessible to the disabled.          

Yehya said the Lebanese society still does not accept to recruit a “disabled person” stressing that people with special needs can work like any other person.          

This as member of the Lebanese Physical Handicapped Union Jihad Ismail called for providing equal job opportunities for people with special needs, and stressed that their rights to employment, education, an inclusive environment, medical care and hospitalization have not been respected.
