REPORT: Again, debates over new electoral law steal the spotlight

There is no sign on the course of the new electoral law looming in the horizon amid hot electoral debates over an array of proposals.

While the Bkerke meeting participants stressed the importance of agreeing on one law which guarantees a just representation for all sects without mentioning the Orthodox Gathering’s proposed law, sources close to the participants welcomed any law that would lead to a real partnership and immunize Christians.

In this regard, former Interior Minister Ziad Baroud told LBCI that the Orthodox Gathering’s draft law is “excellent” in terms of equality and tends to be a political system more than an electoral one.

On the other hand, many observers considered that the electoral sub-committee will not reach any formula, adding that contacts held away from the limelight might result in a complex electoral formula with unpredictable results.
