REPORT: After Gaddafi’s female guards, Assad’s female guerrilla fighters take the spotlight

Members of the Syrian female brigade are receiving intensive military training in the stadium of Wadi al-Zahab neighborhood located at the southern entrance of Homs in a bid to ease the routine chores of regime troops so they can devote themselves to fight the armed opposition groups.     

The first National Defense female unit known as the 'Lionesses for National Defense' and tasked with defending the Syrian state includes around 450 women aged between 18 and 50 years.     

These women who have recently been drafted into the new paramilitary force started operating on the ground mainly in Homs' neighborhoods where residents remain loyal to President Assad.       

In this regard, a group of women armed with Kalashnikov machine guns are guarding the entrance of city. The training of these women who call themselves “guerrilla fighters” includes shooting Kalashnikov rifles and BKC machine-guns, using hand grenades, storming checkpoints, carrying out raids, in addition to other tactics.      

In a related context, according to Asharq newspaper, 40-year-old Abir Ramadan who works at a Radiology Laboratory in Homs joined the National Defense female unit to become one of the “guerrilla fighters” who pledged their loyalty to Syrian president Bashar Assad in the face of rebels who are seeking to topple him.
