REPORT: Will the Iraqi national anthem change for the sixth time?

The Iraqi national anthem might be changed for the sixth time after the Parliament voted on the adoption of a poem for late poet Mohammad Mahdi al-Jawahiri to be national anthem for Iraq.

Iraq is among the countries which have changed their national anthem the most. Since the establishment of the modern Iraqi state in 1921, Iraq saw 5 different national anthems, accompanying each change of rule starting with “As-Salam al-Malaki” (Royal Salute) which was limited to a simple melody, to the anthem of 1958 when the regime turned to republican, all the way to the year of 1963 when the Baath party came to power and the Egyptian national anthem was adopted.

When former president Saddam Hussain took office in 1981, “Ard al-Farateen” was adopted as Iraq’s national anthem, only to be changed later in 2003 with the change of the regime.
