REPORT: Approval of Orthodox Gathering Law brings allies apart

The approval of the Orthodox Gathering’s draft law by the joint parliamentary committee led to many disputes within March 14.

Future bloc MP Nouhad el-Machnouk told LBCI that what happened during the joint committee’s session is a “political May 7”, adding that those who voted on the draft law are not looking for a settlement.

Al-Machnouk added that the Future bloc’s relation with its allies will not go back to the way it was.

In turn, Lebanese Forces Secretary General Fadi Saad told LBCI that differences on the Orthodox Gathering Law within the Future bloc is a passing cloud, adding that the dispute revolves around the approach to this issue. He stressed that efforts are underway to converge points of view, adding “we will engage in the upcoming elections with our allies.”

In light of these developments, former PM Saad Hariri called both Kataeb leader Amine Gemayel and Lebanese Forces Chief Samir Geagea and agreed with them on the following: the Cedar Revolution project and its principles will remain in force, they will engage in elections as one bloc and elections will be held on due time under any circumstances, they will spare no effort to reach a new consensual electoral law which guarantees just representation.
