Mass pruning in Bsharri sparks concern over Lebanon’s iconic cedars

Report by Yara Dargham, English adaptation by Karine Keuchkerian

The “Cedars of God.” That’s what they’re called—majestic, ancient, and deeply symbolic.

But when so many cedar trees in the Bsharri forest are seen lying on the ground, the questions arise: Why is this happening? Who is responsible?

LBCI visited the Forest of the Cedars of God in Bsharri to observe the situation. Pruning work was being carried out by a local committee, along with treatment applications and efforts to secure trees at risk of falling. The scale of the pruning, however, was striking.

In the area, opinions are divided. Shop owners near the forest and some Bsharri residents are concerned by the scope of the work.

Others support the committee’s efforts, though they worry about possible hidden motives, such as selling the wood.

There is no evidence that wood from the pruning is being removed from the forest, but many locals insist that large quantities are missing. They speak of a cover-up for smugglers exporting the wood.

Beyond the dispute between the committee and some residents of Bsharri and its surroundings, environmental experts say the work is not necessarily harmful, provided it is carried out under the supervision of the Agriculture Ministry.

The ministry told LBCI it sent forest inspectors to the site. A decision was made to halt all work because it was carried out without consulting the ministry and without a permit. The ministry said it is preparing a violation report against the committee in charge, and only tree-support measures will continue.

An official report detailing the case will be released next week.

As for local residents, their demand is one: to preserve the Cedars of God. This demand extends beyond Bsharri and its surroundings. It concerns all who care about Lebanon and its environment.
