Lebanon faces growing H3N2 flu cases as temperatures drop

Report by Petra Abou Haidar, English adaptation by Mariella Succar

A new H3N2 influenza strain has been detected in Lebanon, causing concern as cases rise.

H3N2 is a seasonal influenza A virus, similar to H1N1, but with more severe symptoms and different treatment protocols.

This year, the strain has spread widely across Europe, North America, Asia, and parts of the Middle East, including Lebanon. Health authorities have noted an increase in cases coinciding with colder temperatures and the holiday season, when close contact accelerates transmission.

The virus can spread from person to person before symptoms appear.

The standard flu vaccine may not fully prevent infection but can reduce the severity of illness and the risk of complications.

Symptoms of H3N2 include runny nose, cough, fatigue, headache, loss of appetite, and fever. In some cases, patients may experience shortness of breath.

Rapid tests can confirm influenza infection, while PCR tests are more accurate for identifying the specific virus type.

Authorities emphasize that while there is no cause for panic, precautionary measures are especially important during the current season to protect oneself, family, and the community.
