A new study looked at 2 years of data on pornographic terms from Google, dividing religiously conservative and politically conservative states.
The study showed that the more religious you are, the more likely you are to watch porn.
Compared to their liberal counterparts, those who are religious use more search terms on Google considered to be pornographic, according to the research.
The study, by researchers at Brock University in Ontario, Canada, looked at two years of data from Google Trends from different states in the US.
Researchers distinguished between states that are identified as religiously conservative and those that are politically conservative.
They noted that politically conservative states are more likely to look for sex specific terms, such as 'gay sex, free porn and xxx,' whereas those that consider themselves religious look for more generalized sex terms.
Researchers observed moderate-to-large positive associations between greater proportions of state-level religiosity and general web searching for sexual content and greater proportions of state-level conservatism and image-specific searching for sex.'
However, authors of the study stated that this may suggest that religious people indulge more in porn; however, emphasized that there could be another explanation.
Authors clarified that liberal citizens living in states higher in religiosity or conservatism search more for sexual content due to living in a more sexually-restricted environment.
Meanwhile, California-based research group Barna, found that 64 percent of religious men and 15 percent of religious women admitted to viewing pornography at least once a month.
These figures compared to 65 percent of men and 30 percent of women who identified as non-religious and said they watched porn the same amount.
In this regard, Joel Hesch, president and founder of Prove Men Ministries told The Washington Post that this matter needs to be openly addressed in the church, stressing that pornography is addicting.
“It is a problem not just affecting individuals, but families.”
This study may shed light on the sex crimes now being committed by members of the Islamic State who are kidnapping Yazidi, Christian and other women who belong to ethnic minorities, subsequently selling them into the sex market.
According to a recent published report one Yazidi woman claimed that she had been raped 30 times “and it’s not even lunch time yet…I can’t even go to the bathroom,” she was quoted as saying.
Could conservatism and higher “religiosity” be linked to sexual perversion as depicted in the practices of Islamic State militants?
The correlation is too great to ignore.
