She Was A Boy And He Was A Girl; Transgender Couple Marry

The wedding of Jamie Eagle and Louis Davies appeared to be like any other with a bride and groom, heartfelt vows, speeches, cake and dancing. But if you look closer, you will realize it was no ordinary ceremony.

Jamie, the 21-year-old bride, was born a boy and Louis, the 26-year-old groom, was born a girl. And given the state of despair they have both endured along their transgender journey, they often wondered about this day.

As if preparations for the wedding were not hard enough, with the groom agonizing breast removal surgery and Jamie facing hate for being transgender, the couple decided to have it all filmed. The footage will be aired this week in a documentary.

With the title Our Gender Swap Wedding, it would be easy to assume that the couple is yet another example of TV companies taking advantage of vulnerable people to make shock-tactics telly. Nonetheless, they insist, it is true that the result – which is the first in Sky Living’s Forbidden Love series – is an insightful, educational and a window into the lives of two persons who have long felt they were living with the wrong body parts.

“We thought long and hard before agreeing to it, because life is difficult enough for us, without TV cameras encroaching into our daily lives and struggles,” Louis said.

“But in the end, that was our motive for going ahead. We want people to have a sense of what our lives are really like, so that when they talk about transgender issues, they are more informed,” he added.
