Speaker Nabih Berri said the presidential election session, slated for today (June 9), will be held on time.
"The presidential elections will be held if quorum is reached. If not, the session will be postponed once again," Berri told Al-Joumhouria daily on Monday.
He also said there were no new developments in terms of a possible agreement on a new president.
In this regard, Berri said he was asked yesterday about Lebanon's presidential entitlement on the sidelines of the inauguration ceremony of newly elected Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.
Speaker Berri responded by saying that the presidential election session will be held today, in a sixth attempt to elect a new head of state, hoping that it will yield positive results.
Sources close to Prime Minister Tammam Salam said the latter will participate in today's presidential election session, whether a quorum is reached or not.
The same sources also told Al-Joumhouria newspaper that there were no preparations for holding a cabinet session this week in order to resume discussions over a legal mechanism to exercise the president's prerogatives.
Future bloc head MP Fouad Siniora warned on Monday against dire repercussions if the series of ranks and salaries is endorsed in "an unbalanced way".
MP Siniora also told As-Safir daily that the Future bloc will participate in today's presidential election session, adding that the bloc will decide today whether it will attend Tuesday's session aimed to discuss the controversial wage scale.
In this regard, Siniora said he was surprised by the reaction of those who will attend Tuesday's session, noting that they did not examine the consequences that will ensue should the pay scale be endorsed in "an unbalanced way".
Telecommunications Minister Boutros Harb said there was no need to announce his candidacy for the presidential elections as long as his name figures among candidates, noting that he has had a political program since 2008.
In an interview with al-Liwaa daily, Harb blamed Change and Reform bloc leader MP Michel Aoun for obstructing the election of a new president, which "has taken a toll on the country and the Christian community".
"Power vacuum threatens the presence of Christians in Lebanon," the minister said.
He also noted that the new president should not be against the Resistance, adding that the Lebanese state has a duty to protect the Resistance.
