Well-informed sources told As-Safir newspaper on Monday that the Lebanese Armed Forces have eliminated more than 50 terrorists in Arsal's barren range.
"Aerial photos highlight the scale of the blow [the insurgents] had suffered during the last 72 hours," the sources said.
They added that the army raided houses in Arsal and refugee camps in the town's barren range, arresting over 140 persons, mainly Syrian nationals.
Al-Akhbar daily reported on Monday that Jabhat al-Nusra is not holding the kidnapped Lebanese troops in caves in Arsal's barren range but in a two-storey building on the outskirts of the northeastern border town.
"The same building was previously used to hold foreign journalists who were kidnapped in Syria and then released in exchange for ransom," sources said.
"Back then, Arsal's Deputy Municipality Chief Ahmad al-Fliti and Sheikh Mustafa al-Hujeiri played a significant role in delivering the ransom to the kidnappers and transferring the captives to the Internal Security Forces Information Bureau," the same sources added.
Sources close to the Islamic State in Qalamoun told Al-Akhbar newspaper on Monday that the group is set to issue a statement, during the next few hours, threatening to execute another Lebanese soldier.
Asked about whether Jabhat al-Nusra killed Ali al-Bazzal, a kidnapped soldier who appeared in a video alongside martyr Mohammad Hamieh, sources close to Al-Qaeda-linked group denied the claims.
"It is up to Abou Malek al-Talli, the emir of Jabhat al-Nusra in Qalamoun, who is seemingly giving another chance to the Lebanese government," the same sources added.
Prime Minister Tammam Salam is due to arrive to New York today (September 22) and will hold bilateral meetings until Friday, when the International Support Group for Lebanon (ISG) is set to convene.
Salam told An-Nahar daily he will deliver a speech during the ISG meeting that will be attended by foreign ministers from the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council as well as ISG members.
In an interview with Al-Mustaqbal newspaper, Salam said he will meet with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in New York to tackle the file of the kidnapped Lebanese troops.
Salam also said he will ask Turkey to contribute to the release of the captives, after having secured the release of nationals who were held hostage by the Islamic State in Iraq.
