Sheikh Mustapha al-Hujeiri told Kuwait's al-Rai newspaper on Sunday that a breakthrough will be made soon in the case of Arsal kidnapped soldiers.
He also stressed that the kidnappers and the Lebanese government both want to reach a solution for the case as soon as possible.
Similarly, sources told the newspaper that the Qatari mediator Ahmad al-Khatib paid a visit to the border town of Arsal last week.
The same sources added that he met with the kidnappers and obtained guarantees from them that they are serious and willing to free the captives.
Minister of Youth and Sports, Abdul Motleb al-Hennawi told Kuwait’s al-Seyassah newspaper on Sunday that the meeting held at the residence of former president Michel Sleiman tackled the work’s mechanism of the government amid the presidential vacuum.
He also noted that the “independent ministers” support the current work’s mechanism, adding that it is “100% constitutional.”
Sources told al-Mustaqbal newspaper on Sunday that the cabinet will resume holding its sessions on February 26.
The same sources added that discussions over the work’s mechanism of the cabinet “are only temporary”, adding that such an issue can be solved by electing a new president for the country.
Minister of Telecommunications Boutros Harb criticized on Sunday efforts aiming at appointing a new commander for the Lebanese Armed Forces amid the presidential vacuum.
Harb told An-Nahar newspaper that appointing a new army chief and imposing it on the new president is “prohibited.”
“The extension of Army Commander General Jean Kahwaji’s mandate is inevitable,” he added.
Speaker Nabih Berri told al-Mustaqbal newspaper on Sunday that the meeting held with Future Movement leader Saad Hariri was “fruitful.”
“We discussed efforts to safeguard the country and the election of a president,” Berri said.
Berri also revealed that they discussed the cabinet's mechanism amid the ongoing vacuum in the presidency.
“I leave it to Hariri to reveal any additional details regarding other issues... I adopt whatever he announces beforehand,” Berri concluded by saying.
