  • Jumblatt: Ask the ministers about electricity plan
“National Struggle Front” leader MP Walid Jumblatt said his visit to President Michel Sleiman in Beiteddine Palace yesterday was a “courtesy visit”, adding that he invited Sleiman to a family dinner on Sunday evening.
Asked on the electricity plan’s latest developments, Jumblatt told “An-Nahar” newspaper: “Ask the ministers about it, I am not following it; the ministers are the ones who should answer questions about it”.

  • Commercial Bank of Syria not notified of decision to stop U.S. dollar transactions
The general director of the Commercial Bank of Syria Duraid Dergham said that the Bank was not notified of the decision to replace the U.S. dollar withthe Euro in all transactions according to the economic sanctions imposed by the U.S. and Europe on Syria. “The Syrian state replaced the U.S dollar with the Euro a long time ago”, he said. However, the new sanctions will reach outside of public institutions, impacting the daily transactions of private citizens.

Dergham told “Al-Watan” newspaper that the citizens, the businessmen and the private institutions will bear the repercussions of such a decision the most, given the contracts they have signed. “In case the decision includes traders, they will have to change the currency they use in their economic transactions with other countries”, he said.
