Hezbollah concerned about rival candidates breaking through Aoun’s electoral lists

A prominent political source from the current majority told Al Hayat daily on Sunday that this majority’s leaders are convinced that adopting proportionality in the electoral law on the basis of which 2013 parliamentary elections take place is unattainable given the difficulty of ensuring the support of the majority; therefore, it will not be passed at the Parliament.         

The same source said that most of the majority leaders consider that we must go back to the 1960 law that adopts the majoritarian system and considers each Qaza to be a separate electoral district, with the amendments made to it in the framework of the Doha agreement between March 14 and March 8. This agreement led to the combination of some Qazas in the south and the Bekaa and to the new partition of Beirut. According to these leaders, this law, if adopted, must be improved to satisfy some Christian parties.       

The source added that Hezbollah does not hide its concern about Christian opponents of Change and Reform bloc’s leader Michel Aoun breaking through his electoral lists in some of the regions where all of his lists won in 2009’s elections.       

The source said that at a time when both Hezbollah and Aoun were very radical regarding some controversial issues put on the cabinet’s table (electricity, appointments…), Hezbollah told Aoun that his intransigent positions that threaten the cabinet’s unity will not be in his favor during elections; on the contrary, it may reduce his popularity especially that "indicators started to show that his opponents are gaining ground at his expense."
