Frightening! Facebook Can Now See Your Online History

Facebook, a leading social media site, has started collecting information about other websites users visit, the links they click on and their searches on the internet.

The social networking service already gathers details people share on their profiles, including their interests and where they live.

But under a new privacy policy – to which anyone who has logged in to the site since Friday has been opted in automatically – Facebook can track activity outside the website, including internet browsing and some details shared by users with retailers.

“It takes into account pages and places visited on Facebook, alongside browsing on the internet at large,” a Facebook spokeswoman said on Wednesday (February 04).

She added that the changes help Facebook “to better serve more relevant advertising to you”.

The social media network uses cookies – small files which it places on your web browser or device – in order to gather data which can then be transmitted back to Facebook.

Nonetheless, privacy campaigners have voiced their rejection to this move over fears that it may pose a threat to people’s privacy online.
