NASA touted its brand new blue spacesuit on Wednesday (January 25) in a video showing off the suit and its features -- and the so-called 'Boeing Blue' suit is a nod to the future.
The new gear is Boeing-designed and the company has called it the “21st Century Spacesuit.”
“Lightweight. Highly mobile. Minimalist. Innovative,” Boeing said of the new technology in a statement. The spacesuits will be worn by astronauts who will be on NASA mission aboard the Boeing-designed 'Starliner' spacecraft. “The 'Boeing Blue' suit will be worn by all Starliner crew members during launch, ascent and re-entry and will be customized for each crew member to maximize protection, capability and comfort,” the Boeing statement added.
NASA said the spacesuit is lightweight, flexible and reportedly comfortable, and includes features that will enable astronauts to use touch screen technology thanks to sensors in the finger areas of the suit. Similar to its predecessor, the suit is built with a bulb to be worn over the head that enables it to become pressurized in the event of an emergency, giving 'Boeing Blue' the iconic space exploration look.
