Tear gas deployed as clashes continue between police and protesters in Turkey

   
Anti-government demonstrators continued to clash with police into the early hours of Monday morning in downtown Istanbul.

Protesters set fire to barricades in the street, while police attempted to control the crowd by firing tear gas.

On Sunday afternoon, large crowds gathered peacefully for a series of concerts in the Kadikoy District.

During the night chaos erupted when, according to a private Turkish news agency DHA, a group of demonstrators broke off and set barricades on fire.            

There were also clashes between demonstrators and riot police for a sixth consecutive night in the southern city of Antakya in the Hatay Province.                

There have been protests in a number of cities across the country after a 22-year-old protester named Ahmet Atakan died in Armutlu after he joined an anti-government demonstration on September 9.                

The man's family claims he was hit by a gas canister while police deny responsibility for the death.              

Atakan's death renewed a protest movement that had cooled after thousands took to the streets in June in an expression of discontent against Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's government.
