Saudi Arabia officially turns down UN council seat

Saudi Arabia has written to Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon saying it will not take its seat in the UN Security Council, clearing the way for Jordan to assume the traditional Arab seat.

Saudi Arabia's UN Ambassador Abdallah Al-Moualimi said in Tuesday's letter obtained by The Associated Press that it "will regrettably not be in a position to assume its seat" but reaffirmed its commitment to the U.N.

Saudi Arabia stunned the diplomatic world with the announcement that it was rejecting the seat, less than 24 hours after it was elected on Oct. 17. It accused the Security Council of failing to end the Syrian and Israeli-Palestinian conflicts.

Jordan's information ministry said Monday the kingdom is eager to assume the Security Council seat.

Its election by the General Assembly is virtually certain.
