Top diplomats from around the world joined the 50th Munich Security Conference on Saturday, a renowned venue for backroom diplomacy and negotiations.
While attending the conference UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon urged Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and US Secretary of State John Kerry to "use their influence" to ensure the Syrian peace conference reconvenes on 10 February.
A week of peace talks ended in Geneva on Friday with no concrete progress and no immediate commitment from President Bashar Assad's envoys to return on the date suggested by mediator Lakhdar Brahimi.
Ongoing protests in Ukraine are also high on the agenda for the conference, which will be attended by opposition leaders and Ukraine's Foreign Minister Leonid Kozhara.
US Secretary of State John Kerry was expected to meet with Arseniy Yatsenyuk and other Ukrainian opposition leaders on Saturday at the conference
It was unclear whether he would meet with Kozhara as well.
