Canadian Security Intelligence Service says 30 Canadians are fighting in Syria

The head of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service, Michel Coulombe, said on Tuesday about 30 Canadians are fighting with extremist groups in Syria, expressing his concern that these nationals could return home and pose an “immediate” threat to national security.

Appearing before the Senate National Security and Defense Committee, Coulombe said various Canadians are abroad in support of extremist activities, pointing out that around 30 are in Syria.

Coulombe added that their activities range from paramilitary activity and weapons and explosives training to fundraising and studying at extremist Islamic schools.

He also stressed that the number of Canadian individuals overseas is in a continuous flux, their motivations are difficult to ascertain, and their movements are difficult to track.

Various officials had previously said that Canadians left for Syria to fight, but this was the first time a more specific figure had been disclosed.
