Knesset to elect new president on June 10
Knesset Speaker MK Yuli Edelstein officially announced on Monday, June 10 as the date on which MKs will elect President Shimon Peres's successor.

The vote is supposed to be carried out no later than a month before mid-July, when the current presidential mandate ends.

The final date for submitting candidacy to the post is ten days prior to the election.

Shimon Peres is the ninth president of Israel. He served twice as the Prime Minister and twice as Interim Prime Minister, and had been a member of 12 cabinets in a political career spanning over 66 years.

Peres was nominated in early 2007 by Kadima to run in the presidential election, and was elected by the Knesset to the presidency on 13 June 2007 and sworn into office on 15 July 2007 for a seven-year term.

He is the first former Prime Minister to be elected President of Israel.

At the age of 90, Peres is currently the world's oldest head of state.
