Queen Elizabeth welcomed to Paris with pomp and ceremony

Locals and tourists braved the drizzle in the French capital to see Queen Elizabeth welcomed to a Paris town hall decked out with British flags on Saturday.

The socialist mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, walked the British monarch and her husband Prince Philip down the red carpet past onlookers and horse guards.

Despite a historical reputation for anti-monarchist sentiment, French members of the crowd said they were pleased to have seen the Queen.

"She is splendid, radiant. And she really gives off waves from herself; I really admire her," Parisian Hulya Celik said.

"Very smiley, very gracious, I didn't imagine her to be so gracious. And very alert, she was a little too fast to take photos…But no, how I imagined, how I imagined a queen. Very pleased to have seen her," tourist from the nearby town of Orleans, Joanna Laupy, said.

The Queen's visit to France coincided with the commemoration for the 70th anniversary of D-Day, including a lunch and ceremonies hosted by French President Francois Hollande on Friday.
