Malaysia opposition leader acquitted of sodomy

Malaysia opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim was acquitted of sodomy by the Kuala Lumpur High Court, following a trial criticized by outside observers as an attempt to stop him competing in elections that may be held this year.

"I am extremely pleased that I have finally been vindicated," Anwar said in an interview on Bloomberg Television. "It came as a surprise. Of course, a pleasant one. Based on previous evidence, the judiciary is clearly not independent."

Ibrahim told his followers on twitter that, in the upcoming elections, the voice of the people will be heard and the corrupted government will leave power.

Sodomy is illegal in Muslim-majority Malaysia, even between two consenting men. The charge carries a sentence of as much as 20 years in prison.
