Turkey seeks German explanation over spying claims

Turkey's foreign ministry said on Monday a report in a German magazine that Berlin had been spying on Ankara for years would be "absolutely unacceptable" if true and called on the German government to issue a full explanation.

"It is expected that the German authorities present an official and satisfactory explanation on the claims reported by German media and end these activities immediately if the claims are true," the foreign ministry said in a statement.

This comes after Turkey summoned the German ambassador to Ankara over a report in magazine Der Spiegel that Germany's BND intelligence agency had been spying on its NATO ally for years, a Turkish foreign ministry official said.

The German magazine reported at the weekend that Berlin had identified Ankara as a top surveillance target in an internal government document from 2009.

Turkey's acting foreign ministry undersecretary Erdogan Iscan met German Ambassador Eberhard Pohl to voice Turkey's concerns about the report, the official said, without giving further details.
