Fire at Chinese factory kills at least 18

A fire at a carrot packaging factory in eastern China has killed at least 18 people with 13 other injuries, state media reported on Monday (November 17), the latest disaster in a country plagued by a poor record on worker safety.

The fire at the plant in Shandong province broke out at around 7:00 p.m. (1100 GMT) on Sunday (November 16) and was brought under control a few hours later, state run Xinhua news agency reported, adding that the injured were being treated in hospital.

China's state broadcaster CCTV aired footage showing fire-fighters using and an excavator to search through the debris and clear the site.

The company's managers have been detained by police, Xinhua said, without providing further details.

The cause of the fire is still unknown, CCTV said.

China, the world's second-largest economy, has a history of workplace disasters. Workers are often poorly trained or ill-equipped to protect themselves from industrial accidents.

A fire at a poultry slaughter house in the northeast province of Jilin in June 2013 killed 120 people. The blaze was blamed on poor management, lack of government oversight and locked or blocked exits.
