Eight crew missing after cargo ship capsizes off Scotland

Lifeboats searching for the eight crew members of an upturned cargo ship that capsized off the north coast of Scotland were stood down on Saturday night.

A tug boat, Herakles, is expected to stay at the scene, illuminating the area and warning other ships that might be passing.

The Shetland Coastguard was alerted at around 2.30pm on Saturday (1430 GMT) by the crew of a passing ferry after it saw the upturned hull of the Cypriot-registered Cemfjord, a cargo ship carrying cement, in the Pentland Firth.

The Wick, Thurso, Longhope and Stromness RNLI lifeboats (Royal National Lifeboat Institution), the Coastguard rescue helicopter from Shetland, an RAF (Royal Air Force) rescue helicopter and other vessels in the area were involved in the search.

It's believed the 83-metre (272-feet) bulk cement carrier had been bound for Runcorn, Cheshire, on the west coast of the UK.

The search for the missing crew is expected to continue at first light on Sunday. So far, no one has been found.
