Coordinated car bombs in four Iraqi cities targeting Shiite pilgrims killed at least 65 people and wounded 250 people early on Wednesday in Iraq's latest wave of sectarian-fueled violence, officials said.

In the city of Hillah, 95 kilometres (60 miles) south of Baghdad, two car bombs exploded minutes apart at dawn in the center of town, killing 21 people and wounding 53, according to two police officers and one health worker.

The government declared Thursday as a national day of mourning - mainly to facilitate traffic.

For his part, Arab League Chief Nabil Al-Araby denounced the bombings, describing them as barbaric.
