Iran judiciary: bail for 2 Americans under study

Iran's judiciary says it is still reviewing details of a plan to offer bail for two Americans jailed on spying charges.

The statement Wednesday is a potentially embarrassing rejection of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's prediction that Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal could be freed in "a couple of days" just before Ahmadinejad's arrival in New York for the U.N. general assembly.

Ahmadinejad has no direct power over judicial decisions, which are made by courts controlled by Iran's ruling clerics.

Defense lawyer Masoud Shafiei said Tuesday that the court set bail of $500,000 each for the Americans, who were detained in July 2009 while hiking along the Iran-Iraq border. A third American, Sarah Shourd, was released last year on bail.
