Hijab’s defection shakes Syria

An unforseen key event rocked Syria on Monday after the Syrian PM, Riyad Hijab, defected and joined the Syrian revolution.

Riyad Hijab, a Sunnite figure, was born in Deir al-Zour in 1966.

Hijab was assigned to the highest post after Syrian President Bashar Assad appointed him on July 6 as Prime Minister to replace Adel Safar.

He was a member of the Command of the Baath Party between 1998 and 2004 as he handled the presidency of the National Union of Syrian Students in Deir al-Zour between 1989 and 1998.

He was secretary of the Baath party branch between 2004 and 2009 before serving as governor of Kenaytra until 2011. He was later appointed as governor of Lattakia.

He is married with four children.
