More than 18 killed in Southeast Turkey

Turkish sources declared that more than 18 armed members from the PKK (Kurdistan Workers' Party) and only one Turkish soldier were killed since the beginning of the operations launched by the Turkish army on the southeast of the country.

According to local security sources, thousands of soldiers, police officers and "village guards" are participating in operations across the mountains of Cato, and Chernak on the Iraqi border.

Turkish fighter planes and attack helicopters struck suspected Kurdish militant positions in southeastern Turkey and northern Iraq late on Wednesday in a major air-and-ground operation, security sources and witnesses said.

The offensive, which involved at least 2,000 ground troops and 10 F-16 warplanes, underscores a growing cycle of violence in the mainly Kurdish southeast of the country - a development Turkish leaders have linked to the nearby conflict in Syria.
