Syrian authorities lift emergency import ban

Syrian authorities rescinded on Tuesday a decision to ban most imports, the official Syrian news agency said, after a spike in prices and disquiet among an influential merchant class that has been backing President Bashar al-Assad.

The government imposed the ban last month to try to preserve foreign currency reserves under pressure from internal political turmoil, deepening an economic decline triggered by a six-month uprising against 41 years of Assad family rule.

Industrialists were caught by surprise four days ago when a Syrian governmental decision was taken to cut off imports of Lebanese industrial products without any justification.

Lebanese exports to Syria include food industries, concrete, electromechanical instruments and other materials. The only positive note is that transit to Arab countries through the Syrian territories was not affected.
